Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained on groundworks associated with the construction of a two-storey side extension and replacement single-storey rear extension, a soak-away with associated drain runs and the trench for a gas tank at 1 Southbank Cottages. No cut archaeological features, structures or deposits of archaeological significance were discovered during the project, however after the demolition of the existing south-eastern extension the original southern exterior wall of the cottage was revealed, which comprised coursed flints with brick built quoin. The recovered artefacts comprised a small assemblage of 19th and early 20th century pottery and glass, together with a brass cornet manufactured in either 1919 or 1920. The project failed to provide any new information on the known prehistoric, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon exploitation of the region, or any fresh insight into the medieval origin and post medieval development of Westmeston village. |
