Abstract: |
This document sets out the results from a programme of archaeological works carried out by West Sussex Archaeology Ltd at Durford Abbey Farm, Rogate, West Sussex. The works were carried out from November 2016 to November 2017 as part of works to repair and redevelop a Threshing Barn. The results revealed what are considered to be parts of the northern and eastern range of the medieval monastery of Durford, including a section of the abbey church with burials. All the remains exhibited signs of severe truncation due to later landscaping, both following the Dissolution and subsequently. No remains were found surviving to floor level or above. The existing large barn was also analysed as part of this project, by Joe Thompson (Sussex Oak and Iron), and was found to be of two builds, the earlier of probable 16th century date, the later of 18th century. |
