Abstract: |
Excavation revealed a modest number of archaeological features, some of which had been identified in an earlier evaluation of the site. The vast majority of the features appear to be medieval in date, and to represent a relatively short period of activity between AD1100-1200. Whilst there was no firm evidence of structures in the excavation areas, the amount of pottery recovered, and the freshness of some of the sherds, indicates that people must have been living quite close by. Although it is tempting to suggest that any associated settlement would have been near the present main road, which may have ancient origins, the concentration of features seemed to diminish in the western part of the site, particularly to the west of a ditch which follows the same alignment as the road. The truncated remains of a probable Roman road were identified in the north-east part of the site. This is likely to be part of the road from Arlington to Barcombe, and it appears to survive as a raised earthwork in the area immediately east of the present site. It is possible that the road follows a natural geological ridge, containing a large amount of iron pan and manganese inclusions, through this area |
