Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by The Wheeldon Group to undertake an archaeological evaluation prior to determination of a planning application for a housing development at Outseats Farm, Alfreton, Derbyshire (centred on NGR 442414, 355540). Previous excavations comprising both trial trenching and a strip, map and record have already been undertaken within Area E and have identified and characterised a medieval enclosure system. The current scheme of works was commissioned to further investigate the former farm and the southern footpath at the southwest boundary of the site. The presence of asbestos around the demolished buildings of the farm shifted the focus to the footpath area. Five trenches were excavated, four contained archaeology and one bioturbation. Two medieval walls, 404 and 605, were identified and represent a delineation of the landscape. Whether these are agricultural boundaries or delineating a foot path is not clear. Undated pit 505 contained evidence of in situ burning. Pit features are common across Area E and the wider site but he presence of in situ burning is somewhat unique. Two ditches were identified on site 511 and 806, they likely form part of a drainage or boundary system however they do not seem to correspond to the medieval enclosure system and could represent a later delineation of the agricultural landscape. The trenches in the southern part of the site both contained bioturbation. 704 could represent a northwest-southeast hedgerow and 706 and 809, shrub bowls. Previous works on site have identified hedgerow systems they have also found numerous shrub and tree throws interpreted as the clearing of the landscape for farming.
