Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained by Oakford Archaeology in November 2021 during initial ground reductions and the subsequent excavation of the foundations for the new buildings, totalling approximately 205m in length, 0.75m wide and up to 1.2m deep.
The work exposed a mid red clayey sand (100), interpreted as a natural subsoil, at a depth of 0.4m below ground level. This was overlain by a mid reddish brown sandy clay (100) topsoil. A very small collection of archaeological material, consisting of a single sherd of South Somerset coarseware (18th-19th century) and eight sherds of industrial whiteware including blue and white transfer ware (post-1780) and possibly the result of manuring, was recovered from the topsoil.
No deposits, features or dating evidence indicative of archaeological activity was found. The lack of pottery and other artefacts from the site, despite examination of spoil heaps, further indicates that the site is archaeologically sterile. |
