Abstract:
The results of a geophysical survey carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) on land off Mamsey Lane, Williton, Somerset, as part of a planning submission for proposed development of the site. The site comprises 11 fields c.280m north-west of the historic core of Williton within a shallow valley and south facing slope to the south of Bridgwater Bay. The settlement has Saxon origins and was a major royal administrative centre, though was sub-divided in the 12th century. By the 14th century much of the manor was in the hands of the church, though following Reformation the lands were gradually re-united in the hands of the Wyndhams. The Somerset HLC describes the site as within 'Anciently Enclosed Land' with medieval or prehistoric origins. Much of the surrounding landscape contains evidence of Bronze Age funerary activity and prehistoric to Romano-British settlement and field-systems; whilst many of the surrounding farmsteads and settlements date to the medieval period.
