Abstract:
In October 2007 Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd (ASC) carried out historic building recording of 36 Lattimore Road, St. Alban's, Hertfordshire in response to proposals for the demolition of the warehouse on the site and the erection of twelve 1-bed flats. The building comprises two adjoining 2-storey, brick built structures under separate gabled roofs, with a single storey building to the north of the eastern block and a lean-to attached to the northwest corner of that. The eastern end of the main block is from the 1860s/1870s and was part of Macqueens hat manufacturers. The building was extended in the early 20th century and is recorded as having also been a printing works and a lingerie premises. Although the west windows have been replaced and most of the others block externally by brieze blocks, the main fabric of the building remains little altered. Internal modifications include the subdivision of some of the rooms and the installation of central heating and storage galleries. The later 2-storey extension has more robustly constructed roof trusses than the earlier block and an Art Deco façade to the street front, both of which suggest a degree of prosperity and innovation on the part of the owners
