Abstract: |
This report presents the results of archaeological evaluation trenching that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a mixed use development at Langarth Garden Village, Langarth, Truro, Cornwall. The site is located to the north of Threemilestone and Gloweth and it extends from West Langarth Farm in the west to the industrial estate that lies adjacent to Treliske Hospital in the east. A total of 25 trenches were opened across the site. The archaeological evaluation trenching identified a total of 33 archaeological features and it broadly validated the results of the geophysical survey. The majority of the identified features were field boundaries that are associated with agricultural activity. The majority of the features are Post Medieval field boundaries. Some features produced 18th century or 19th century pottery, however many did not. All of the features were very shallow and plough scars that cut into the skillet bedrock were observed across the site. One ditch, located in Trench 09, was deeper and more substantial than the others and appears to form part of a long and curving geophysical anomaly that is attached to a probable settlement enclosure and that is likely to be of Prehistoric date. The easternmost trench that was excavated, Trench 26, was also the most complex and it contained multiple ditches and several pits. Almost all of the features within Trench 26 produced 19th century pottery, however some Medieval material and a sherd of 16th century or early 17th century Raeren stoneware tankard was also produced. The geophysical survey identified a line of small square enclosures here and immediately to the north of this area was a farmstead called Venton Green that was abandoned c.1850. The excavated results would imply that another cottage or outbuilding(s) once stood on the site and the pottery that was produced could suggest Medieval antecedents. Further archaeological investigation of the B1/SUDS and the central NAR areas (low to negligible archaeological potential) is unlikely to produce meaningful additional information. The exception is the Post Medieval site that was identified within Trench 26 (high archaeological potential). A programme of strip-map-sample would be appropriate in this location. A further programme of archaeological monitoring and recording in the area around Trench 09 (moderate archaeological potential) may also be of value in order to better understand the significance of the long and curving Prehistoric field boundary. |
