Abstract: |
Following the evaluation phase of work a watching brief was conducted towards the front of the site adjacent to Bow Road where previous access during the evaluation was unavailable. The watching brief identified a well, covered by a concrete slab; the well was constructed of red bricks and chalk blocks. No dating evidence associated with the well was observed, however Bowles’ folding map of ‘Ye City of London, detail showing Bow’ of 1731 shows dwellings along the frontage of Bow Road and it is likely the well corresponds to one of these. The watching brief also recorded that significant truncation had occurred in this part of the site with natural gravel lying directly below the previous development structures. No other finds or features were identified during the course of the watching brief.Records have been digitised and are stored at Wessex Archaeology. |
