Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out for Grimsby Institute during the groundworks for a number of extensions to the existing college buildings. The site is situated in an area of some archaeological potential particularly for the medieval period. The proposed development area is believed to lie within the boundaries of the medieval priory of St Leonard's. The watching brief revealed a number of features dating to broadly to the early medieval and medieval features. The earliest feature contained pottery from the Anglo-Saxon period and consisted of a shallow linear. The form of this feature, and an adjacent feature, strongly resemble furrows and it is probable that the pottery is residual from a nearby feature. A medieval buried soil was encountered in one area which was cut by a large ditch which was backfilled with material containing medieval pottery and animal bone. A further ditch was observed in the area of the extension to the hall. |
