Abstract:
Geophysical survey had indicated the potential for remains of prehistoric activity to be located in the western part of the site. This had focused on a possible ring ditch in the south-central part of the western field, and on two other roughly circular anomalies nearby. The evaluation has demonstrated the presence of prehistoric archaeology in this area, with the probable ring ditch confirmed as being of Late Bronze Age to Iron Age date, the date established on a small assemblage of pottery recovered from its fills. Two other circular anomalies nearby were shown to be associated with modern features, ground disturbance or variations in the geological substrate. Further activity of possible prehistoric date, comprising several intercutting ditches that were not detected by the geophysical survey, was identified c. 50m to the east of the probable ring ditch. Similarly, two pits in the western part of the western field contained large quantities of burnt and fire-cracked pebbles, a type of feature generally characteristic of prehistoric sites. The remaining features highlighted as being of interest by the geophysical survey were post-medieval or modern field boundaries, two of which are shown on early Ordnance Survey maps or aerial photographs.
