Abstract: |
In December 2011 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried an archaeological evaluation of the former stable yard, Guessens, 6 Codicote Road, Welwyn, Hertfordshire (NGR TL 2303 1635). The evaluation was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning approval for the construction of a new residential development with integral garage and two new garage blocks. The site lies within Welwyn Conservation Area (CA) which is centred on the historic core of the town and the Church of St Mary 100m to the south-east. It is also located within Area of Archaeological Significance No. 7, which encompasses a substantial Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at Welwyn, and the subsequent area of the medieval settlement. The site lies to the immediate north of the Grade II* listed dwelling of Guessens. The site had a potential for Romano-British and post-medieval archaeological remains. In the event the evaluation revealed the remains of a post-medieval possible yard surface and a 19th century building. |
