Abstract: |
In November 2012 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological monitoring and recording at Runnymede House, 96 - 97 High Street, Egham, Surrey (NGR TQ 0126 7142). The monitoring was commissioned by Farrell Design Studio on behalf of their client Mr. Neil Beard, and in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the construction of a new infill flat within an existing undercroft parking area. The site lies along the northern frontage of the High Street of Egham, a town known to date from at least the medieval period onwards. It is situated within an Area of High Archaeological Potential (AHAP) and Historic Landscape Characterisation No.806, which refer to the historic core of the town centred on the High Street. Cartographic sources suggest that the frontage and southern section of the site was occupied by a building as early as 1729. Therefore the site had a potential for medieval and post-medieval archaeological remains. In the event the monitoring revealed modern truncation and a modern pit. |
