Abstract: |
In August 2008, Archaeological Solutions Ltd conducted a programme of historic building recording of a barn. This followed a previous historic building assessment carried out for the client prior to the grant of planning permission. The buildings to be recorded comprised a 5-bay barn with a smaller, L-shaped building attached to the west. The western part of the barn, comprising two bays, substantially preserves timber-framing consistent with a 16th century date, which originally had wattle and daub panels. The remaining elements are predominantly primary-braced and so later, but reusing elements of the older structure. Cartographic and structural evidence suggest an 18th century date for this remodelling. In the modern period, the roof has been replaced, and render applied over the original weatherboarding, which survives. The smaller L-shaped building to the west is probably of 18th century or earlier date, but has undergone extensive remodeelling and renovation, with many historic timbers reutilised or replaced. |
