Abstract:
Addyman Archaeology undertook a programme of historic building recording, a watching brief and excavation during renovations in the University of Edinburgh Old College buildings, including groundworks in advance of the insertion of a lift shaft and services, from April 2016 to March 2017. The watching brief revealed sleeper walls relating to the Robert Adam and William Playfair construction, as well as concentrated dumps of artefact-rich deposits including crucibles and glass and ceramic experimental tools and vessels from the 18th and 19th century chemistry laboratory, associated with Joseph Black, Professor of Medicine and Chemistry. Also recovered were stretches of the pre-Old College University buildings of the 1781 Chemistry Laboratory and its c.1812 extension, as well as fragments of a medieval or early post-medieval building, small pits and a possible medieval or early post-medieval compacted surface; natural geological clay was exposed across the areas excavated. Historic building recording was undertaken during stripping-out and down takings where the historic fabric of the Robert Adam and William Playfair building was revealed, including ceiling and flooring structures, wall fabric alterations, and previous decorative scheme fragments.
