Abstract:
This report presents the results of an archaeological strip-map-assess-sample-record that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) during groundworks for the construction of an anaerobic digestion facility at Land at Wicks Farm, Ford, West Sussex. An area that measured c.23m by c.21m and that was orientated north to south was excavated by tracked mechanical excavator to the depth of formation and under archaeological supervision. The archaeological strip-map-assess-sample-record identified an overall deposit model of: topsoil (101), a grey-brown friable silt; overlying modern tarmac surface (103) and hardcore bedding layer (102); overlying made ground deposits (104), (105), (106), and (107), tipped layers of building rubble and stone hardcore; overlying natural (100), a yellow-brown firm clay. A low hedgebank {108} was formed along the roadside that was comprised of redeposited natural clay and that overlay the made ground deposits. No features of archaeological interest were identified during the strip-map-assess-sample-record.
