Abstract:
The purpose of the project was to ascertain to what extent climate change or a range of other potentially interconnected elements, such as ground drainage, site management and ongoing agricultural practices, may be contributing to areas of visible desiccation at the site of Carvoran/Magna. The proposed assessment survey and strategy was designed to ascertain the state of the archaeological deposits across different areas of the site by utilising proven geoarchaeological techniques coupled with the rapid advancement in Geophysical technology. This included improvements in monitoring techniques and assessment, geoarchaeology methods and preservation assessment techniques. The geoarchaeological bore hole work at Magna Roman fort discovered significant deposits of anaerobic and watterlogged archaeological material to the north and south of the Roman fort. It also discovered, in bore hole 3, a hidden lake which may be the reason for the vallum diversion in this area to the north of the site. The legacy of the project was to better understand how continuing climate change and landscape management practices could impact the preservation layers at the site and the installation of 4 peizometers at Magna, which will contiune to monitor ground water conditions for the next 10 years was a significant achievement. Early data from those peizometers has shown a direct correlation between heavy rainfall and changes to the hidden archaeological environment. The bore holes at Magna have shown the landscape to be incredibly diverse across the scheduled area with significant changes from the vallum to the north (bore hole 1) and the deep anaerobic deposits to the south (bore hole 5). The recommendations in this report pave the way for future targetted work at Magna to improve upon the methods used in this site assessment.
