Abstract: |
Trial trenching and excavation of the site of Tanpit House and and a former tan yard shown on 18th century mapping. During trial trenching six trenches were excavated finding limited remains of the house, though the tan yard had been destroyed by quarrying.
The excavation phase found that the farm buildings had been totally rebuilt in the mid-19th century, destroying any evidence for earlier activity on the site.
Two 19th century railway bridges were also recorded photographically. Historic map evidence showed that the site had previously been occupied by Tanpit House from at least the mid-18th century until c. 1968-70. 18th century mapping shows a ‘Tan Yard’, likely to have been used for the curing of leather, to the south-east of the farm, though later maps show the tan yard destroyed by quarrying.
Brick and stone foundations and cobbled surfaces likely to date to the mid-19th century were found in the western half of the excavation area. Beneath these was a ditch which contained mid-19th century ceramics. No evidence was found for the tan yard and remains pre-dating the mid-19th century appear to have been destroyed by 19th and 20th century activity. |
