Abstract: |
Repairs carried out to Bedfordshire's historic bridges between 1982 and 1994 were accompanied by detailed historical research and archaeological recording. This enabled the analysis of the county's bridges as a group of monuments, investigating the effects of local topography, maintenance liabilities, transport needs, the availability of raw materials, and the influence of wider architectural developments on local bridge construction. A group of major medieval bridges and associated foot causeways in the Ouse valley is noted as of particular importance. A number of 18th and 19th century bridges display the adoption of new architectural and engineering techniques, while other bridges of the same period continue in traditional local style. Bridges of the early 19th century Grand Junction Canal and Ivel Navigation are also discussed, and a summaries of historical references to bridges in each river valley demonstrate the complexity of local communications. |
