Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief monitored excavation of two large pits for the creation of soakaways in the driveway at Furness Abbey Cottage, Abbey Approach, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. The cottage lies immediately to the north of the original North Gate of Furness Abbey, within the Scheduled Monument area, and the archaeological work was a condition of Scheduled Monument consent. The abbey was established in 1127, while Furness Abbey Cottage was constructed c1873 as the coachman's house for the nearby Furness Abbey Hotel. The watching brief revealed considerable deposits of dumped material of probable 19th century date below the surface of the driveway, beneath which in the southern pit was the base course of a well-built wall of large dressed blocks and in the northern pit the dumped deposit was laid on what appeared to be a less substantial wall of thinner dressed blocks. It is possible that these represent sections of the precinct boundary of the Abbey, which is thought to have been in this location.
