Abstract:
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for an industrial development at Plot 5, Cornwall Business Park East, Scorrier, Chacewater, Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2021) that was drawn up in consultation with Cornwall Council. The site was located within the boundaries of the former Hallenbeagle Mine, undesignated but noted for its completeness. The Hallenbeagle Mine was a significant producer of copper ore during the 18th century and 19th century, however the majority of the archaeology that relates to the mining history of the site has been lost due to post-mining industrial use. The site has been subject to significant mining remediation works in the recent past, with these works identifying a mineral lode (Reed’s Lode) on an east-north-east to west-south-west alignment just to the north of the site. The footings of a building (a sawmill) were also identified within boundary of the site, however this was located outside of the proposed development footprint. The site was fully stripped in 2011-2012 and all mining remains were capped and stabilised. The site was (re)cleared of vegetation and of any remaining soil, dumped rubbish, and weathered natural prior to the excavation of the building footing. The building footing was a single trench that measured c.98.2m in total length and c.0.8m wide. A single remediated mining feature that had been backfilled/capped with concrete was noted towards the southern end of the building footing. No additional features were noted by the excavators and no additional features were visible in the supplied photographs.
