Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a historic building recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) to record and to inform the adaptive reuse of a former piggery at The Piggery, Lower Brownsham Farm, Hartland, Devon. The piggery at Lower Brownsham Farm is a good surviving example of a mid-to-late 19th century piggery that is associated with a large farmstead in a small coastal hamlet. It sits self-contained within a former historic agricultural landscape that once included several known medieval orchards. The historic mapping indicates that another separate building existed to the south-western corner of the piggery, however the only evidence to suggest that this building existed is in the form of an overgrown rubble heap that fills a gap in the hedge to the south-western corner of the piggery and slate rubble within the yard. It is clear that the site has been neglected for several years due to the reduced overgrown shrubbery within the yard. The recent renovation works indicate that the building has likely received a full roof replacement, a later inserted concrete floor, and heavy repointing to the internal walls. The building has lost a lot of its original form as a result of the renovation works and this has changed its current aesthetic presentation and its internal integrity, however evidence of several features remains. The doors and the windows are considered to be of classic design that are indicative of the building's former function and that have been identified as unique features within the build. The yard has been created with a neat rounded wall to the east and raised banks to the west, however there is no indication that the pigs would have used the neighbouring orchards due to the limited accessibility. The proposed conversion of the piggery is considered to be a good use of the space, however certain design features (including the sliding timber latches to the doors and to the windows) would benefit from being integrated within the design to uphold the narrative of the building within the hamlet. |
