Abstract:
This report presents the results of a buildings appraisal that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) prior to the construction of a new footpath at Cowlins Mill, Carn Brea, Cornwall. The section of the leat that was recorded lay to the northern end of the phase 3 block and it had been truncated during the construction of the building. The interior was partly filled with clean granite aggregate that had tipped down from the southern end. The surviving section of the leat was c.5.40m long, 1.17m wide, and 1.48m high. It was defined by walls of concrete block to the west and by shuttered concrete to the east. The shuttering that was used was "big six" type corrugated iron sheeting and this had then been used to close the roof of the leat before a concrete slab (the current ground surface) had been poured on top. The base of both walls had been undermined by the flow of the water. A 12” diameter iron pipe projected through the western wall. The covered leat was open to the side of the railway cutting and the leat formed a narrow incised channel with no obvious structure beyond the site boundary. The leat was presumably carried on a launder over the railway cutting. A pile of recent debris/rubbish partly closed the entrance to the leat.
