Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a heritage assessment and a geophysical survey that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a solar development at Land at Merryfield Lane, Ilton, South Somerset, Somerset. The desk based assessment followed the guidance that is outlined in: Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment (CIfA 2020); and Understanding Place: Historic Area Assessments in a Planning and Development Context (Historic England 2017). The historic visual impact assessment followed the guidance that is outlined in: Conservation Principles: Policies and Guidance for the Sustainable Management of the Historic Environment (English Heritage 2008); The Setting of Heritage Assets (Historic England 2017); Seeing History in the View (English Heritage 2011); and Managing Change in the Historic Environment: Setting (Historic Scotland 2016). The historic visual impact assessment referenced: Visual Assessment of Wind Farms: Best Practice (University of Newcastle 2002); and Guidelines for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment: 3rd Edition (Landscape Institute 2013). The geophysical survey followed the guidance that is outlined in: Geophysical Survey in Archaeological Field Evaluation (English Heritage 2008); Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Geophysical Survey (CIfA 2014); and EAC Guidelines for the Use of Geophysics in Archaeology: Questions to Ask and Points to Consider (Europae Archaeologiae Consilium/European Archaeological Council 2016). In terms of designated heritage assets, there is one Scheduled Monument and there are 21 listed buildings or structures within 1km of the site. The zone of visual influence that was drawn up for the site indicated that screening from hedgerows and from trees is very comprehensive and even those heritage assets that are in relative proximity to the site are largely insulated from any visual effect. Only one Scheduled Monument (the moated site at Merryfield), two Listed Buildings (Cad Farmhouse; St Peter’s Church), and one non-designated heritage asset (the Wadham Almshouses) were deemed to suffer any adverse effect (negligible adverse). The aggregate and cumulative effects were deemed to be minimal (negligible adverse), however the effect on the historic landscape of extending the built form of the village out to the line of the former Chard Canal was assessed as minor adverse. With this in mind, the overall impact of the proposed development can be assessed as negligible adverse. The impact of the proposed development on any buried archaeological resource would be permanent and irreversible, however the geophysical survey would indicate that the archaeological potential for the site is low to negligible. |
