Abstract: |
The gatehouse at Pirton Grange is a grade II* listed building located in the hamlet of Apsley End, north west of Pirton in North Hertfordshire (grid ref. TL1228 3294). It stands on the eastern side of a rectangular moated enclosure. The large timber-framed house which is situated in the centre of the enclosure dates from the fifteenth century with later additions. The gatehouse was put on the Buildings at Risk Register in 2001. Albion Archaeology undertook historical building recording and archaeological monitoring undertaken during repairs to the building carried out between 2011 and 2012 with the aid of an English Heritage repair grant. Assessment works carried out prior to the repairs included an impact assessment (Albion 2011a), historical research (Blanchflower 2011) and tree-ring analysis (Bridge 2011). A programme of archaeological monitoring of below ground works and historic building recording was carried out during the repairs according to the requirements of English Heritage and the local planning authority brief. |
