Abstract: |
Four trial trenches measuring 10 m by 1.2 m were proposed. Due to onsite practicalities 3 were moved and one was shortened. A single archaeological feature, a small pit, was uncovered in trench 4, demonstrating that archaeology was present within the site.
The presence of the pit and of a subsoil above the natural geology suggests the natural has not been truncated and the potential for archaeological resources to survive.
In the event only one feature was uncovered which was seen to cut the subsoil. A single sherd of pottery was recovered from its lower fill and dates the pit to the post medieval, and a small piece peg tile from the upper fill dates to the medieval or early post-medieval.
Two sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered from the upper fill. While these are residual they are of interest as there is very little other evidence of activity from that period in the area. |
