Abstract:
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during the ground reduction for a series of new dwellings to the rear of the Coach and Horses, Daventry. Northing of archaeological interest was recorded during the ground reduction and no finds were recovered. Historic building recording was also carried out on the standing buildings prior to alterations taking place and a number of phases of construction were recorded. The inn had previously been recorded as being of 18th-century date, but map evidence suggests that this part of Daventry was not built up until the early 19th century, and it seems likely that the pub dates to the second quarter of the 19th century. No archaeological remains were observed in the ground reductions. It is therefore likely that this part of Daventry lay outside of the medieval and post-medieval settlement and was not occupied until the 19th Century when the pub was built.
