Abstract:
The area was evaluated by means of 10m of trial trenching (2x5m trenches). The work was carried out in accordance with The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Standards and Guidelines (CIfA 2014). The evaluation revealed a Roman period ditch. The sample section cut through the ditch yielded a small assemblage of Roman period pottery and a moderate amount of charcoal and charred plant material. These finds are sufficient to suggest reasonably close proximity to a point of domestic origin, although not necessarily close to an area where grain was processed. The proposed construction of the extension to the rear of no 68 will negatively impact significant archaeological deposits. Archaeology Warwickshire recommend that the footprint of the proposed extension should be stripped to formation levels under archaeological supervision and any archaeological features present should be sample excavated and recorded in accordance with a suitable Written Scheme of Investigation. The work should be carried out by a Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Registered Organisation.
