Abstract:
Archaeological strip map and record on the site of the late 18th-20th century cotton spinning Mill at Moss Hey, Shaw. Well preserved remains of the main spinning block, engine house, boiler house and flue system including chimney stack were recorded, along with a range of buildings to the southwest that may represent an earlier phase of the mill. During the recording of the Moss Hey Mill, two main ranges of buildings were investigated. The range to the northeast, comprising the ground floor of the main spinning block, the stair tower, the engine and boiler houses with associated flues and flue stack was not closely dated in terms of its construction, but is likely to have been of 19th century date, perhaps built when the first steam engine was installed in 1822. The range of buildings was certainly extant by 1845, when it is depicted on the Crompton Tithe Map.
