Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a walkover survey and a geophysical survey that were carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) in order to identify any archaeological sites or features that might be affected by the proposed development of land at Kingsley Village, Penhale, St Enoder, Cornwall. The geophysical survey followed the guidance that is outlined in: Geophysical Survey in Archaeological Field Evaluation (English Heritage 2008); and Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Geophysical Survey (CIfA 2014). The walkover survey did not identify any significant earthworks or severe disturbances within the field that was subject to geophysical survey. The area to the east of the site has already been developed and it would have been differentially subject to truncation through terracing, topsoil stripping, and modern service trenching. It is, however, possible that some archaeological deposits may survive where there is made ground. The majority of this area was subject to archaeological investigation during the dualling of the A30 and in relation to the motel. These archaeological works investigated a part of a large multivallate enclosure (Penhale Round) that dates to the Late Iron Age and the Romano-British periods. There is documentary evidence that a medieval and later fair was held on the site until c.1800. The geophysical survey indicates that features of archaeological origin are present within the area of the proposed development. These features are associated with two phases of prehistoric field system and include: a coaxial field boundary that may pre-date the round; a Late Iron Age field system that is associated with the round; a post medieval field boundary; historic boundaries that are associated with Penhale Cottage; and other undated linear anomalies and possible pits or tree throws. The proposed development is likely to disturb any surviving archaeological deposits within the area of the proposed development. Any archaeological deposits within the footprint of the existing retail park will have have already been subject to truncation and disturbance. |
