Abstract:
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at Cockington Cottage, Abbotsham, Bideford, Devon. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2020) that was drawn up in consultation with the Devon County Historic Environment Team (DCHET). An interconnecting series of trenches were excavated by machine with a toothless grading bucket and under archaeological supervision. The trenches exposed a series of cobbled surfaces, including a probable path that ran east-west and the probable remains of a building across the southern edge of the site. The trenches also exposed a terrace cut that began at the northern edge of the site and that cut the natural. The terrace cut lowered the level across most of the southern and the eastern portions of the site, however it then ended somewhere towards the western edge of the site. The stratigraphy of the site was comprised of: topsoil (100), a mid grey-brown loose sand-silt c.0.13m thick; overlying demolition layer (101), a mid grey-brown loose-friable sand-silt with frequent medium and large sub-angular stones c.0.45m thick and thicker within terrace cut (104); overlying layer (102), a very stony yellow redeposited natural that was present in the north-eastern corner of the site; and layer (103), a mid grey sand with abundant shell c.0.15m thick that covered much of the south-eastern corner of the site; overlying natural (111), a firm-soft mid yellow clay. The site presented evidence of post medieval occupation, with demolition layer (101) overlying a series of cobbled surfaces. A single sherd of 18th-19th century industrial slipware with yellow glaze was recovered from the north-eastern corner of the site within demolition layer (101) and above cobble (105). The cobbled surfaces showed some evidence of patch repair work and there was likely a path that ran from the building to the east-north-east for field access or similar. The cobbled surfaces appeared to have survived well in places due to their densely packed nature and it is likely that more cobbled surfaces are present to the west with cobble (105) and to the south and possibly to the south-west with cobble (109) and cobble (110). That being said, it is unlikely that these deposits will be disturbed unless future works are planned on the site.
