Abstract:
This report presents the results of a watching brief that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) during the installation of a path and improvements to a watercourse and a flood defence management system at Mellanear Stream, Millpond Gardens, Hayle, Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2020) that was drawn up in consultation with Cornwall County Council and Historic England. A 1.60m wide strip was excavated to a depth of c.0.34m around the edge of an existing concrete structure. Additional sections were excavated to a depth of c.0.49m in the locations of the proposed access steps. The topsoil was a dark grey-brown friable clay-silt loam c.0.15m thick. The topsoil directly overlaid modern backfills that are associated with the construction of the concrete structure and with modern features in the waterside edge of the bank on either side of the concrete structure. The modern features cut a subsoil. The subsoil was a mid yellow-brown compacted sandy-silt loam with moderate-frequent medium stones. The subsoil formed the defensive bank beside the adjacent mill pond. The finds from the topsoil, the subsoil, and the later cuts were all 19th century to 21st century in date. Some of the stone within the subsoil and the modern backfills could have come from ruined structures that were associated with the mill and the ropewalk, though no significant archaeological features or deposits were present. The depth of the excavation and the disturbance to the bank beside the millpond made dating the feature improbable, though it was ostensibly maintained during and after the 19th century.
