Abstract:
An archaeological structural watching brief was maintained prior to and during works to reinforce and conserve the glazed lantern within Bretton Hall, Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The photographic survey and structural watching brief revealed information about the construction of the roof lantern, demonstrating that the lower part at least is an integral part of the flat roof the vestibule at Bretton Hall. Recording of the glazed painted glass panels of the octagonal roof lantern showed that five of the eight panels carry heraldic or symbolic designs relating to the Blackett, Wentworth and Beaumont families. Documentary evidence indicates that the vestibule forms part of work by Jeffry Wyatt dated to 1812-1814; it is not clear if the lantern is part of the original design, and modern repairs have removed the archaeological connection between the roof lantern and roof structure.
