Abstract:
trial trenching Historic building recording (Level 1) & archaeological evaluation was carried out at Home Farm, Main Street, Brandon, Warwickshire in connection with a proposed development comprising demolition of some surviving farm buildings and the erection of a single detached dwelling and garages. In the south of the site where the proposed dwelling is sited, the results showed that the underlying deposits had been largely truncated because of earlier quarrying for sand and gravel, the void being subsequently in-filled with redeposited soil. In the northern part of the site where the proposed garages were to replace the existing farm out-houses, historic building recording identified the former wash-house and an open byre with a brick and cobbled floor. During the trenching, below ground deposits were characterised by a series of features associated with the development of farm during the C19 and into the C20. There was little evidence within the site of activity before this period.
