Abstract:
This report sets out the results of an Archaeological Strip and Record that was carried out by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd. on the 15th and 16th February 2017 during groundworks associated with the erection of one pair of three bedroom semi-detached dwellings with associated garaging and formation of vehicular accesses on land adjacent to Red House, Salents Lane, Duggleby, North Yorkshire (SE 8783 6610; Fig. 1). The Archaeological Strip and Record was undertaken to fulfil and discharge an archaeological condition attached to the Planning Application Consent (Ref: 16/00243/REM). Following the results from the previous Trial Trenching undertaken in February 2013 on site the application for residential development was subject to an Archaeological Strip and Record. The Archaeological Strip and Record Excavation was undertaken across a single area within the footprint of the proposed dwellings. The archaeological work involved monitoring the excavation of foundation trenches for the proposed dwellings. The foundation trenches were excavated by a rear-acting mechanical excavator, operating under close archaeological supervision. The remains of a probable post-medieval chalk wall were recorded. The foundation trenches for the new dwellings illustrated large areas of modern disturbance and rubble infill from 20th century cottages formerly occupying the site.
