Abstract: |
A walkover survey of the survey area was undertaken on 24th May, 26th May and 9th June 2021, following on from documentary and cartographic research. The walkover survey investigated and recorded those features identified by the analysis of the LiDAR images, as well as those features not previously identified. New archaeological features observed were recorded and plotted onto a map (see Figure 3). Digital colour photography was used throughout the survey and photographs of relevant features are included in this report. In total 60 features of archaeological or possible archaeological origin not recorded on the ENPHER were identified within the survey area. A number of features identified through LiDAR analysis were determined to be non-archaeological in origin and have been recorded in Appendix 1. It is likely that the majority of the features date to the post medieval period and may be associated with the function of the Deer Park, although a number may relate to the pre-park agrarian landscape and may span the medieval-post medieval period. It is possible some of the features have prehistoric origins. A notable number of quarries were recorded within the survey area, which may have provided material not only for the construction of the Deer Park boundary but also the wider Dunster Castle Estate. Within some parts of the survey area there was dense ground vegetation coverage including brambles, ivy, bracken and gorse with areas of fallen deadwood. This impeded assessment of possible archaeological features, particularly slight features, within some parts of the survey area and it is therefore not possible to consider this survey to have been exhaustive. |
