Find Information for small find number 38060

Object: Bracelet
Accession number: 38060
Material: Copper Alloy
Material species: Unidentified Species
Function: Personal adornment or dress
Small find period: Roman
Period of stratigraphy: Roman
Early date: 150
Late date: 400
Typology: PENANNULAR - SNAKE-HEADED
2nd typology: COOL 1983 XA/B
Description: Complete; Diam 66.8 x 52.6mm; int Diam 58 x 44mm; min W hoop 5mm; max W terminals 11.3mm. Copper-alloy penannular snake bracelet; D-sectioned hoop expanding to stylised 'snake-head' terminals with pointed ends, decorated with central hatched ribs, opposed crescentic 'eye' mouldings and lightly incised details on the tip of the nose. Found on right forearm of SK380592. As Cool group Xa/b (1983, 146-8) this example does have low relief features, but these are more like incised/stamped Xa decoration than nauralistic Xb high relief examples. High relief Xb examples are earlier, often 2nd century. Examples from dated contexts span mid 2nd to late 4th century . Burials include Colchester (Crummy 1983, 43-4, fig 45, nos1711 and 1712; 3rd/4th C inhumation) London, Eastern Cemetery (Barber and Bowsher 2000, 166, B291.2-1, in silver; ibid 156, B201.1 in copper alloy).

38062 Finger Ring Copper Alloy Roman (200 - 500) view

Find Information for small find number 38062

Object: Finger Ring
Accession number: 38062
Material: Copper Alloy
Material species: Unidentified Species
Function: Personal adornment or dress
Small find period: Roman
Period of stratigraphy: Roman
Early date: 200
Late date: 500
Typology: FINGER RING X 2
2nd typology: COOL 1983 XVIII/XXVII VARIANT
Description: Two near-matching finger rings on 4th digit of left hand. A) Complete; Diam 21mm; int Diam 14.8mm; W bezel 3.9mm; min W hoop 3.4mm Copper-alloy finger ring; cast ?circular hoop, perhaps originally slightly facetted, with sub-square section of even width; integral rectangular block bezel the same width as the hoop set at one side. B) Complete; Diam 20mm; int Diam 16.3mm; W bezel 4.4mm; min W hoop 3.1mm. Copper-alloy finger ring; cast hoop possibly slightly facetted, becoming more robust and expanding very slightly towards slightly angled/keeled shoulders; integral rectangular block bezel of same width as hoop. Best considered a variant of Cool group XXVII (1983, 279-81 and 1148, especially fig 125 no. 8 from Richborough, Kent, though it is more circular). In discussing the type generally Cool notes a likely late Roman emphasis on dating, with many probably of 4th- or even 5th-century date (ibid, 280-1). The slightly facetted hoop is reminiscent of her group XVII-XVIII and the trace of keeled shoulders is reminiscent of her group XVI; these other types belong to the 3rd/4th centruy (Cool 1983, 264-6)
