Title Stanmore Lodge, Sandtoft, North Lincolnshire: Historic Buiding Recording Report
Description Historic building appraisal and recording was undertaken on two adjacent development sites at Stanmore Lodge, Belton Road, Sandtoft, North Lincolnshire in March 2023. The recording was required to investigate the remains of remains of structures associated with a former RAF air base that extended across the sites during the Second World War. The works were undertaken as a condition of planning approval for the demolition of the structures on the sites and the construction of five dwellings. York Archaeology was commissioned by NPP Properties Ltd to undertake a the historic building recording. Buildings 1-4 are late 20th century buildings erected subsequent to the RAF occupation on site and comprise a bungalow, industrial shed and timber stable blocks. Structures 6-9 are concrete raft foundations for former airfield buildings, with more recent timber buildings constructed on the foundations of Structures 6 and 7. Structure 6 is a large H-plan foundation, probably of a crew block, whereas Structures 7-9 are likely to have been maintenance blocks, as indicated by the 1944-45 Air Ministry plan. Building 5 is the only surviving standing structure of the former RAF complex. This appears to have been associated with the H-plan building (Structure 6), with a chimney suggesting that it contained a furnace or heating system, and it may have been used as a drying room. Part of the heating system appears to have been re-used to dry saddles, as attested by wall-mounted saddle racks above the remains of a wood-burning stove. The interpretation of the significance and development of the standing buildings was not appreciably hampered by obscured evidence that may be revealed during the course of the demolition; however, the vegetation cover across the southern plot meant that some details of the foundations of the airfield buildings were obscured.
