Introduction

Roman Samian bowl from Alcester
Roman Samian bowl from Alcester

Warwickshire Museum Service is part of Heritage and Culture Warwickshire and is the final repository for archaeological archives excavated within the county of Warwickshire, with the exception of the town of Rugby and directly adjoining parishes (Easenhall, Harborough Magna, Churchover, Cosford, Newton and Biggin, King’s Newnham, Little Lawford, Church Lawford, Dunchurch and Cawston Parish).

Paper and finds archives are stored and managed at the Museum’s Collection Centre, which is an off-site storage facility. From 31st January 2022, the digital element of all archives is to be deposited through ADS to ensure their long term preservation, integrity and accessibility.

Warwickshire Museum has a long tradition of collecting archaeological material; from early antiquarian assemblages acquired by members of the Warwickshire Natural History and Archaeology Society to the developer-funded scientific excavations of the 21 st century. Notable excavation archives come from the multi-period prehistoric sites near Salford Priors, Roman town of Alcester, Roman mortaria kiln sites at Mancetter, Early Medieval cemetery sites at Wasperton, Bidford-on-Avon and Stretton-on-Fosse and Medieval ceramic kilns at Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton. In addition, Warwickshire Museum has been involved in the Portable Antiquities Scheme since 1997.

Please note: Warwickshire Museum does not accept archaeological archives from the Borough of Solihull.
