This Historic England funded project aimed to summarise and disseminate the current extent of knowledge of archaeobotanical remains within the midland counties of England. The collection comprises spreadsheet data from this project. The data presented was collected during the production of the review, and is summary rather than numerical data, taken from excavation or specialist reports concerning plant remains ranging in date from the Palaeolithic to the post-medieval period. The data was largely published between 2000 and 2010, with some more recently published data which added significant knowledge.
Categories of remains covered in the review are cereal grains and chaff, fruits/seeds from wild plants (mainly crop or garden weeds) and some other economically useful plant remains from fruits, nuts and fibre plants. Occasional reference to other types of archaeological plant remains are made.
An accompanying review report references earlier data collected by Peter Murphy and Dominque DeMoulins as part of an previous draft. Data is searchable by county, period, and types of material, with notable findings and summaries given. Bibliographic references are provided, and the reader is directed to the original reports for detailed numerical data. The accompanying report is published as part of the Historic England Research Report Series and is freely accessible at https://historicengland.org.uk/research/results/reports/47-2019
