Visual characteristics

Hard grey-buff (10YR 6/2) fabric with prominent angular white inclusions up to 1 mm across and an off-white slip on the outer surface.

Petrology

Thin sectioning shows rounded inclusions (c. 0.3-1.0 mm) of quartz, quartzite, quartz-mica-schist and occasional granite rock fragments, set in a matrix of optically isotropic brown fired clay containing fine quartz and mica. Occasional fossil algae, augite, plagioclase and orthoclase feldspar are present (Peacock, 1977d).
