The Medway Valley Palaeolithic Project (MVPP) was developed in response to the priorities and objectives of the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund. The project was focused within the Thames Gateway development area on sand/gravel aggregate deposits in southeast Essex and north Kent associated with the palaeo-Medway River. This area has a long history of aggregate extraction, as well as still containing a substantial aggregate resource liable for future extraction or impact by other development.
The project followed from work carried out under the ALSF round 1 on the project Thames Estuary Survey of Mineral Extractions Sites based at Essex County Council, but also implemented on the Kent side of the Thames Estuary.
