Abstract | The limestone gorge and its associated caves, rock shelters and solution cavities are well known for their extensive Quaternary deposits which have produced large quanties of fossil vertebrate bones and associated evidence in the form of lithic tools, of human occupation .Research undertaken during the 1977-92 period demonstrated extensive diversity in the nature of evidence from cave sites within the Creswell Crags area.(Jenkinson,1984,Jenkinson and Gilbertson,1984}.In addition to extensive accumulation of fossil vertebrate bone within caves ,there are examples of vertebrate bone accumulation in cave talus deposits and nearby fluvial accumulations. There has been no previous attempt to consider accumulation and survival of animal skeletal remains within this group of limestone gorges. This study reports the results of an environmental survey undertaken during the 1970s. |
