| Collection Title | Oxford Expedition to Egypt: Scene-details Database |
| Description | This collection comprises the Oxford Expedition to Egypt: Scene-details Database. The database can be searched as an interactive resource and is also available to download, alongside a bibliography and representative drawings of scenes. The fundamental aim of the research project is to provide academic and non-academic users with an archaeological and bibliographical database of (arguably) the most informative two-dimensional art of Ancient Egypt: the carved and painted scenes and scene details in private tombs of the 'Pyramid Age' or Old Kingdom period (c. 2650-2150 BC). In creating this resource the basic objective is to offer authorised users an easy access to thoroughly researched and well-organized data concerning the decoration described above; this data is intended primarily for Egyptological and multi-disciplinary research, yet sections of the database could well be suitable for children and teenagers who are undertaking their own research or working on projects relevant to the national curriculum. The database holds a diverse range of material, therefore its potential as a research tool is extremely impressive. Given time and further expansion it is likely to become a primary resource for the study of the material culture and natural history of Ancient Egypt, and it also provides references or scope for other types of investigation, notably (but by no means exhaustively) the definition of artistic dating criteria; the statistical study of preserved scenes and scene details; scene orientation in single and multi-roomed chapels; and the analysis of written conversation and formal captioning in scenes. Most relevant to the long-term protection of antiquities, perhaps, is the usefulness of the database as a conservation record. Once its lists are arranged in chronological order they display the earliest-known examples of scene types and their many details, and simultaneously reveal the approximate number of examples currently known to have survived since ancient times. The rarity of certain scenes and scene details is often surprising, if not alarming - a fact that, potentially, could assist conservationists in targeting the monuments in greatest need of careful inspection or physical repair. |
