Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

This dataset comprises the electronic components of the Saar Excavation Archive. The non-digital records of the project have been deposited in the National Museum of Bahrain where they are available for consultation.

The Saar Database

The original site database migrated through several formats before ending up in Access 2000 (mdb). In this format, it consisted of linked sets of data (tables), with customised queries, views and reports. The main tables were devoted to the finds and to the contexts. Subsidiary tables held information on the photographic record, drawing numbers for objects, site supervisors' plans, architect's plans, and phase, block and site level designations.

The Saar Imagebank

The Saar digital archive comprises over 1100 scanned photographs of the archaeological remains and finds from Saar and more than 450 scanned drawings. The original digital images, available at different resolutions, are on CD-ROMs (Kodak Photo CD format) deposited in the National Museum of Bahrain. All the images have also been archived in the Saar Imagebank where they are linked to the database for easy search and retrieval. Archiving of the Imagebank was funded by the Gerald Averay Wainwright Fund.

Saar Geographical Information System1

The Saar Geographical Information System contains the digitised plans of all buildings and installations, together with the location of all finds plotted in situ.
