Quarries

General Comments:

Quarries were being worked as early as the 13th century and can be found between one and a half and four miles west of Chilmark, just above the sides of the valley of the River Nadder around Tisbury. These quarries are believed to have supplied the stone for Salisbury Cathedral during the 13th century (rather than Chilmark) (Tatton-Brown 1998: 40-41). In the early 14th century Tisbury stone was also used for the tower and spire (ibid.). This stone has continued to be exploited up to the 20th century.
