Description:
The field system around Carvannel farmstead forms a pattern of sub-rectangular enclosures with slightly irregular boundaries. It probably has origins in the medieval or early post-medieval period.
The farm has expanded considerably since the early 19th century; the earliest enclosures are those around the farmstead (including four enclosures to the north) shown on the Tehidy estate map of 1806. Before the Tithe map was surveyed the farm had expanded to the west and north, with new and larger rectangular enclosures created. A trackway and hollow-way running southward to the farm from Tregea Hill and Portreath (see 92105) was probably abandoned at this time. By the later 19th century, smaller enclosures had been created on Tregea Hill (see 92100 and 92107) and were linked to those on the remainder of the farm.
During the earlier 20th century, the cliffland of Carvannel Down (south of Ralph's Cupboard) was taken in and improved. This newer field had a wartime hutted camp (92115) and an associated complex of gun emplacements (92110) built on it but most traces of these have now been removed. The enclosures on Tregea Hill are now derelict.
