Description:
On the lower southern slopes of Beagletodn Downs are the traces of long linear stony banks which closely follow the natural contours (see Fig. 6). The uppermost walls run into areas of dense clitter. They are all in very poor condition and average 1.2 m wide and 1.0 m high. They do not appear on the 1841 Tithe Map and it is possible, considering their very poor preservation that they may be earlier medieval relics of small-scale moorland reclamation which by the mid 19th century, had revetted back to a larger area of croft. During the 1840's this whole area was known as 'Great Croft' (Tithe Apportionment Schedule, see Fig. 10).
