Coachman's cottage, Stable & former Barn, Belle Grange, Claife

Description:  Standing just to the west of the farmhouse (ntsmr 25528) is this range of buildings consisting of barn with grange space and stable within, coachman's cottage and workshop to the rear.
The barn is probably of late 18th century date as indicated by the roof structure and masonry. It is now proven but likely that the coachman's cottage is a mid 19th century addition, at which time part of the barn was converted into a stable. There is no evidence of vertical joints as exterior walls are rendered, however an owl hole in the wall between cottage and barn exists, suggesting it was an exterior wall and that the cottage is an addition. The workshop at the rear is an early to mid 20th century addition, probably for use as a garage; the garage doors into the barn are of the same date, although an opening may have already existed here for horse drawn vehicles.
