Description:
The S face of the Wall has a number of vertical offsets between which the measurements were taken. There is little or no sign of bulging. The total length of this section is 280.8m with an average width of 2.02m. There are up to 3 Roman courses for most of the length of the Wall but as many as 6 Roman courses between 178.6m and 237m.
1: 21m, from field wall to E facing vertical offset, 2 Roman courses, string course on 2nd course down (Clayton Wall Survey A17).
2: 8.9m, to W facing vertical offset, 3 Roman courses, rebuilt Wall leaning inwards towards top (Clayton Wall Survey A16).
3: 41.5m, to corner, 3 Roman courses (Clayton Wall Survey A15).
4: 6.8m, to E facing vertical offset, 2-3 Roman courses (Clayton Wall Survey A14).
5: 70.8m, to E facing vertical offset, 2-3 Roman courses, horizontally offset bottom course (Clayton Wall Survey A13, A12, A11).
6: 16.1m, to W facing vertical offset, 2-3 Roman courses, horizontal offset at 11m (Clayton Wall Survey A10).
7: 44.5m, to corner, up to 5 Roman courses, lots of whin in rebuild, horizontally offset bottom course (Clayton Wall Survey A9, A8, A7).
8: 9.1m, to E facing vertical offset, up to 6 Roman courses, horizontally offset bottom course (Clayton Wall Survey A7).
9: 70m, to junction with field wall, up to 4 Roman courses, 4 courses horizontally offset reducing to 2 courses then running into ground along length (Clayton Wall Survey A6, A5, A4, A3, A2).
